Summer 2026 Graduate and Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Hydrology
We are recruiting graduate and undergraduate students for fully funded research opportunities focused on hydrology and remote sensing in the Boreal forest , beginning May 2026 . Students will work on field- and data-driven research projects in natural wetlands and wetlands affected by linear disturbances (e.g., mineral roads and seismic lines) in the Fort McMurray region. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in environmental fieldwork while contributing to appl

New publication: The Role of Snow in a Pilot Scale Pit-Lake Constructed Upland Catchment Within the Athabasca Oilsands Region
Members of our research group, along with collaborators, have published a new paper in Hydrological Processes exploring the role of snow in a pilot-scale pit-lake reclamation system in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region. The study examines snow accumulation and spring snowmelt within a constructed upland catchment draining into Lake Miwasin . Because snowmelt often represents the largest precipitation event of the year in northern Alberta, understanding how it is stored and rele

Wrapping Up the 2025 Field Season
Marked by the successful completion of our Fall takedown trip, another field season is in the books for the AU Hydrology Lab! We had a very productive Summer across our three major research projects thanks to the dedicated work of our students, research assistants, technicians and post docs! SMHCO Thanks to research assistants, Kaitlyn and Katrina, for continuing the weekly measurements of stream discharge, groundwater levels and water chemistry throughout the entire Summer.
