We are recruiting graduate and undergraduate students for fully funded research opportunities focused on hydrology and remote sensing in the Boreal forest, beginning May 2026.
Students will work on field- and data-driven research projects in natural wetlands and wetlands affected by linear disturbances (e.g., mineral roads and seismic lines) in the Fort McMurray region. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience in environmental fieldwork while contributing to applied hydrology research in northern Alberta.
What you’ll do
Conduct fieldwork in boreal peatland environments
Collect hydrological and soil data (e.g., water table measurements, sampling)
Support remote sensing and data analysis activities
Work alongside graduate students, technicians, and faculty in a collaborative research setting
Who should apply
We welcome applications from students enrolled in or recently graduated from environmental science or related programs, with an interest in hydrology, water, and working outdoors. Previous field experience is an asset but not required—we are happy to train motivated candidates.
How to apply
Interested students are encouraged to reach out with a brief introduction, CV, and transcript to: Joseph Tuffner (jtuffner@athabascau.ca), Jennifer Attema (jattema@athabascau.ca), or Dr. Scott Ketcheson (sketcheson@athabascau.ca). Athabasca University and the research team are committed to equity and encourage applications from members of historically marginalized groups.
